Provisional personal insolvency numbers decrease in December 2023

Personal insolvencies decreased in December 2023, according to new monthly statistics released today by the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA).

During December, there were 805 new formal personal insolvencies – falling from 853 in November.

Of the new personal insolvencies, 509 were bankruptcies, 289 were debt agreements, 7 were personal insolvency agreements, and 0 was insolvent deceased estates.

Where AFSA could identify the industry an individual worked in, the most common industries were:

  • Construction (89)
  • Health care and social assistance (86)
  • Retail trade (81)
  • Other services (81)

In December 2023, there were 7 new temporary debt protections.

Throughout the period, 232 people who entered a formal personal insolvency were also involved in a business – rising from 205 in November.
