61.1% of new personal insolvencies are in capital cities in December quarter 2021

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) released regional personal insolvency statistics for the December quarter 2021.

The proportion of people entering a new personal insolvency in capital cities was 61.1% in the December quarter 2021. This is a fall from 62.4% in the September quarter 2021.

New personal insolvencies fell by 166 (-10.2%) in capital cities in the December quarter 2021 compared to the previous quarter. They fell in all capital cities except Greater Adelaide and Greater Perth. Over the December quarter 2021, new personal insolvencies outside of capital cities fell by 48 (-4.9%).

The Greater Sydney regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wyong (25), Campbelltown (NSW) (23), Penrith (20) and Sydney Inner City (20). In the rest of New South Wales, they were Newcastle (23), Maitland (15) and Shoalhaven (14).

The Greater Melbourne regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Whittlesea - Wallan (26), Wyndham (23), Casey – South (18) and Melton - Bacchus Marsh (18). In the rest of Victoria, they were Ballarat (13), Geelong (10), Grampians (8) and Latrobe Valley (8).

The Greater Brisbane regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Springfield - Redbank (30), Ipswich Inner (29) and North Lakes (23). In the rest of Queensland, they were Ormeau - Oxenford (35), Townsville (33) and Cairns - South (20).

The Greater Adelaide regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Playford (23), Salisbury (20) and Onkaparinga (13). In the rest of South Australia, they were Fleurieu - Kangaroo Island (7), Limestone Coast (6) and Yorke Peninsula (5).

The Greater Perth regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Wanneroo (26), Rockingham (24) and Mandurah (23). In the rest of Western Australia, they were Mid West (8), Wheat Belt - North (8) and Bunbury (7).

The Greater Hobart regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Hobart - North West (8), Hobart - North East (7) and Brighton (4). In the rest of Tasmania, they were Launceston (16), Devonport (13) and Burnie - Ulverstone (8).

The Greater Darwin regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Palmerston (6) and Darwin Suburbs (4). In the rest of Northern Territory, there were 5 new personal insolvencies.

The Australian Capital Territory regions with the highest number of people entering personal insolvency were Belconnen (8), North Canberra (5), Gungahlin (3), Tuggeranong (3) and Woden Valley (3).
